      Mifepristone: Mechanism & Uses

      Drug Class Antiprogestin (Progesterone receptor antagonist)
      Mechanism Blocks progesterone. This hormone is essential for pregnancy maintenance. Blocking it causes the uterine lining to break down and softens the cervix.
      Primary Uses 1. Medical termination of pregnancy (combined with Misoprostol).
      2. Management of hyperglycemia in Cushing’s syndrome.
      Contraindications Ectopic pregnancy, chronic adrenal failure, hemorrhagic disorders, or concurrent anticoagulant therapy.

      Misoprostol (Cytotec®)

      Feature Description
      Drug Class Synthetic Prostaglandin E1 analog
      Mechanism Induces contractions. Binds to uterine receptors to cause strong contractions and cervical ripening (dilation).
      Uses 1. Prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers.
      2. Off-label: Medical abortion, miscarriage management, labor induction.
      Side Effects Diarrhea, strong abdominal cramping, nausea, chills (transient fever).

      Combined Protocol
